NEW MOON IN ALGOL: SIDEREAL MUNDANE ANALYSIS

The May 2026 New Moon (NM) is exceptional in that it falls within 2* of conjunction with the powerful fixed star Algol. According to traditional teaching, this should have significant effects at the mundane level. This is one of the most feared and symbolically intense stars in traditional astrology. The conjunction recurs approximately every 7–8 years in mid-May. In traditional astrology, Algol (Beta Persei), the ‘Head of Medusa,’ was associated with violence, collective fear, mass emotionality, catastrophe, extremism, beheadings, and events that provoke strong public reactions. However, some modern astrologers also associate Algol with concentrated power, raw primal force, and the unleashing of energies that are usually suppressed.

I performed a study to examine how these New Moons correlate with measurable increases or decreases in major mundane events during the month following the lunation, compared with the month preceding it as baseline.

I used the electional search program of the Solar Fire software to identify the dates of all the New Moons occurring within 2 degrees of the zodiacal longitude of Algol, from the year 1900 to present. Traditionally the orb of influence of the fixed stars is deemed to be one degree only, but with Algol being a major one I extended to 2 degrees. A total of 20 lunations were found (excluding current), all of them occurring in mid-May, at approximately 7-8 years intervals.

The categories of mundane events examined include:

• Wars and geopolitical conflict

• Natural disasters

• Scientific and technological achievements

• Artistic and cultural milestones

• Legal and political reforms

• Financial and economic crises

Rather than attempting an exhaustive statistical catalogue of every global event, this analysis focuses on the dominant historical developments surrounding each New Moon and compares the relative intensity of events in the month before and after the lunation.

*Detailed Historical Patterns

1901 and 1904: Imperial Competition and Military Escalation

The early cycles coincided with a world dominated by imperial rivalry. The 1904 New Moon occurred during the Russo-Japanese War, one of the first modern industrial wars. The month after the lunation saw intensification of naval operations and international anxiety regarding the balance of power in Asia.

The 1901 cycle similarly coincided with increased unrest in colonial territories and intensifying imperial competition among the European powers.

The overall pattern suggests activation of geopolitical and military developments rather than periods of resolution.

1912 and 1920: Prelude to Structural Upheaval

The 1912 New Moon followed the Titanic disaster and occurred during mounting Balkan instability. In the months afterward, European militarization and diplomatic tensions continued to increase, contributing to the atmosphere that would culminate in World War I.

The 1920 cycle unfolded amid the chaotic aftermath of World War I. The months following the New Moon saw labor strikes, revolutionary agitation, and social unrest in Europe and parts of the United States.

These cycles appear associated with periods of unstable transition following major structural shocks.

1923 and 1931: Economic Crisis and Political Radicalization

The 1923 cycle corresponded with worsening German hyperinflation and increasing political extremism within Weimar Germany. Conditions deteriorated further during the month following the New Moon.

The 1931 cycle is particularly striking. The world economy was already weakened by the Great Depression, but the period after the New Moon saw escalating banking crises and growing support for extremist political movements.

These cycles show a strong relationship with financial instability and social fragmentation.

1939, 1942 and 1950: War Cycles

The 1939 New Moon stands out dramatically. The month after the lunation witnessed accelerated diplomatic collapse leading toward World War II. Astrologically, this was a most intense constellation, with a conjunction to Uranus and grand trine with Neptune and Mars. Venus was conjunct Saturn, in turn at the centre of a T-square with Mars and Pluto.

The 1942 cycle occurred during the height of WWII and corresponded with intensification of military operations in both Europe and the Pacific.

Most notable is the 1950 cycle. Only weeks after the May 1950 New Moon, the Korean War erupted, transforming the Cold War into a direct military confrontation. The New Moon was trine Mars, semi-square Venus, in turn opposed by Neptune.

Among all examples in the series, these three cycles show the clearest correlation with warfare escalation.

1961 and 1969: Technology, Space, and Strategic Competition

The 1961 cycle occurred in the aftermath of the Bay of Pigs invasion and during heightened Cold War tensions. The months afterward saw intensification of the space race and geopolitical confrontation.

The 1969 cycle is exceptional because it correlates not with destruction but with scientific achievement. Shortly after the New Moon came the Apollo 11 Moon landing, arguably one of humanity’s greatest technological milestones. This lunation was trine Jupiter and opposed Neptune, and Venus was trine Mars.

This suggests the conjunction with Algol may not always manifest destructively. Under certain conditions it may correspond to concentrated collective effort and breakthrough achievement.

1977, 1988 and 1996: Cultural and Technological Transition

The later twentieth-century cycles show somewhat softer manifestations.

The 1977 cycle coincided with rapid advances in computing, popular culture, and entertainment technology.

The 1988 cycle unfolded during the late Soviet reform era, with increasing momentum toward the end of the Cold War.

The 1996 cycle correlated with accelerating internet expansion and globalization.

In these cases the pattern appears associated less with war and more with rapid transition and systemic reorganization.

1999, 2007, 2015, 2018 and 2023: Instability in the Globalized Era

The 1999 New Moon occurred during the Kosovo conflict and was followed by continued NATO escalation.

The 2007 cycle is especially important economically. Shortly afterward, the first major signs of the global credit crisis intensified, eventually leading to the 2008 financial collapse. The New Moon was square Neptune and semisquare Venus.

The 2015 and 2018 cycles corresponded with rising geopolitical polarization, migration crises, terrorism concerns, and trade wars.

The 2023 cycle occurred amid the Ukraine conflict and rapidly accelerating artificial intelligence development. The month after the New Moon saw increasing military offensives alongside major AI breakthroughs and public concern regarding emerging technologies. This lunation was unique in that it was at the midpoint of Mars/Neptune and sextile to both.

Statistical and Thematic Interpretation

Across the cycles, several recurring themes appear:

The most common effect is not necessarily immediate catastrophe but acceleration of existing processes. The month after the New Moon frequently shows:

• Increased intensity

• Greater polarization

• Acceleration of conflict

• Structural transition

• Concentrated collective activity

The conjunction with Algol appears especially linked to periods where underlying tensions already exist and then become more visible or active. The astrological patterns are broadly in line with traditional teachings. However the “positive” aspects such as trines and sextiles, especially to malefics, often have negative outcomes.

The evidence from the historical record suggests that New Moons with Algol are associated less with ordinary continuity and more with acceleration points in collective history. In many cases, the month following the lunation showed a measurable increase in geopolitical conflict, financial instability, ideological polarization, or rapid technological change compared with the preceding month.

Although not every occurrence produced catastrophe, the pattern consistently correlates with periods of intensified historical momentum. The strongest examples include the lead-up to World War II in 1939, the outbreak of the Korean War in 1950, the banking crises of 1931, and the technological breakthroughs surrounding the 1969 Moon landing.

Overall, the pattern appears to signify periods where dormant tensions or potentials move rapidly toward manifestation, making these New Moons important markers in the study of mundane astrological cycles and collective historical development.

*The 2026 New Moon with Algol

The May 16 New Moon occurred at 1*44’ sidereal Taurus, within one degree of conjunction with Algol. It was conjunct Mercury and Uranus, with Mercury at the midpoint of NM/Uranus and also Mars/Venus. The lunation was semisquare Saturn. These are critical configurations which are likely to be associated with escalation of current conflicts and a deterioration in market conditions. The emphasis on Mercury is a pointer towards worsening conditions in the transport sector, critical for the economy as a whole.
